Meet Buttercup the mare: this old gal was experiencing a host of health issues including weight loss, difficulty eating, and a mass near her left eye. It can be a challenge to care for aging horses, but Laurel’s House stepped right up to make sure Buttercup gets the care she needs to have a comfortable and happy retirement. Dr. Gatz performed the dental work Buttercup needed to be able to eat more comfortably, is diagnosing and treating the mass near her eye, and made sure anything Buttercup needs to be comfortable, she gets! A heartfelt thank you to Swissvet Veterinary Products and Miller & O’Connor Veterinary Medicine, PLLC for lending the necessary dental equipment, Merck Animal Health Equine and the American Association of Equine Practitioners for providing vaccines, and to all our donors who make this care possible. If you would like to help us care for horses in our community, please donate today!

Tee is a 21-year-old gelding who has served as a therapy horse at a youth camp. In recent months, the camp was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Tee found himself homeless and unemployed. Dr. Erin Gatz, Laurel’s House’s Equine Program Director immediately stepped up to help Tee, providing essential veterinary care including his core vaccinations and annual examination. Our ability to help horses like Tee is made possible with generous assistance from the Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign sponsored by Merck and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Don’t worry, this handsome guy has also found a beautiful facility to spend the rest of his days. Here’s wishing Tee a happy and healthy retirement!

While the Coronavirus pandemic has caused Laurel’s House to suspend our mobile spay/neuter services, we are continuing to help our community in different capacities. Laurel’s House veterinarians are working with local private veterinary practices, local animal welfare agencies, and individual owners to identify pets at risk for surrender, euthanasia, or leaving urgent conditions untreated due to lack of access to veterinary care. We are assisting such pets by providing the care they need at no cost in order to keep families together and healthy during this trying time. Laurel’s House is seeing urgent cases only, and following all social distancing and disinfection protocols recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. To request an appointment to have your pet’s urgent condition evaluated and treated by a Laurel’s House veterinarian, please email or call (281) 653-6176.

When Laurel’s House heard that Oliver the pot-bellied pig’s family was having a difficult time accessing veterinary care for him, we sprang into action. Dr. Gatz and Kym took excellent care of Oliver this week, providing him with the castration surgery and vaccines he needs to have a healthy and happy life. Donate today to help us make our community a safe haven for ALL.

Dr. Crum and Big Tex Feed and Pet Supply collaborated to bring a clinic for examinations, vaccinations, and diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. We love meeting people and speaking with families about their pets! Thank you to Big Tex for making this event possible!

February 23rd, 24th, and 25th 2020

This week Dr.s Crum and Gatz were in Mayaguez Puerto Rico volunteering with the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program Cornell University team at Spayathon For Puerto Rico. The Cornell team spayed and neutered 1162 pets at no cost to owners, and the Spayathon for Puerto Rico project crossed the 50,000 patient mark on World Spay Day! How amazing is that?! Back at home in Houston, Dr. Hoggard, Kym, and the rest of the Laurel’s House team provided free spay/neuter surgery, core vaccinations, and microchips to 46 pets!

February 1st, 2020

Laurel’s House had a fabulous start to February with a very special project made possible by funding from Houston PetSet. Our team performed 28 free spay and neuter surgeries for residents of the Buena Villa apartment complex. As always, each surgery included vaccinations and a microchip. A huge thank you to Houston PetSet for making these lifesaving services possible!

Dr. Crum and Kym had a great time talking to first and second graders at Holmquist Elementary about careers in veterinary medicine. We had a great time discussing what we do as veterinarians and veterinary technicians. We are proud to help cultivate a new generation of animal health care professionals who will help make Houston a safe haven for all!

January 12th, 13th, and 14th 2020

Last Sunday Laurel’s House Vice President and wildlife veterinarian Dr. Cheryl Hoggard taught physical exam and triage skills to wildlife rehabbers for an International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council course hosted by the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition. Dr Hoggard’s session emphasized appropriate handling, restraint, and stress reduction. We are so pleased to be a part of elevating the welfare of our wildlife species. Together, we can make Houston a safe haven for ALL.
